Spice cake

Warm fall spices in a rich buttermilk cake

Ingredients

  • 1 cups brown sugar
  • 1 stick butter, softened
  • 0.5 cup vegetable oil
  • 5 large eggs, separated
  • 2 cups all purpose flour
  • 1 tsp baking powder
  • 1 tsp baking soda
  • 1 tsp cinnamon
  • 0.5 tsp nutmeg
  • 0.25 tsp cloves
  • 0.25 tsp allspice
  • pinch of salt
  • 1 cup buttermilk

Directions

  1. Whisk dry ingredients together
  2. Add wet ingredients and stir to combine
  3. Bake for 25 min in two greased 9 inch cake pans at 350°F.

Notes

  • Doesn’t halve neatly due to the eggs, but makes a fabulous layer cake with a basic buttercream icing.
