Spiced apple blackberry jam

Holiday cheer in a jar


  • 2 cups peeled, cored and chopped apples
  • 0.5 cup red wine vinegar
  • 1 tsp lemon juice
  • 3 cups blackberries
  • 2 cups sugar
  • 0.25 teaspoon nutmeg
  • 0.25 teaspoon cinnamon
  • 0.25 teaspoon cloves


  1. Combine apples, vinegar, and lemon zest in pot. Bring to a boil over medium heat. Cover and simmer for 10-15 minutes, until the apples begin to soften, stirring occasionally.
  2. Stir in remaining ingredients. Simmer for 20-30 minutes, stirring often, until the jam thickens. Test for set if desired.


  • NOT tested or developed for pressure or water bath canning. Preserve by freezing in small jars with half an inch of head room and looser lids until fully frozen. Alternatively, test for acidity and set, then process according to general directions for your altitude.
  • Using a high-pectin variety of apple with a mellow flavor, such as red delicious, allows the blackberry and spices to shine.
